On Dec. 6, 1917, two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. One of those ships was loaded with explosives, which ignited, producing the largest manmade explosion in human history to that point. In seconds, the 2.9 kiloton explosion killed 2,000 people, injured 9,000, and destroyed 12,000 buildings in a 2.6 kilometre radius.
