Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was arrested and extradited to the United States on drug trafficking charges. His arrest came after a request from U.S. authorities, which was promptly approved by the Honduran Supreme Court and implemented by the national police.
Hernández was convicted of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States and related firearms offenses. During his presidency from 2014 to 2022, he was accused of using his position to facilitate the transportation of large quantities of cocaine through Honduras to the U.S., in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes from major drug traffickers. This illicit activity was carried out while Hernández publicly supported anti-narcotics measures, creating a facade of cooperation with international drug enforcement efforts.
His involvement in the drug trade included protecting drug shipments with the help of the Honduran police and military, selectively extraditing rivals to the U.S., and receiving financial support from drug cartels to maintain his political power.
