On May 3, 2007, Madeleine McCann, a three-year-old British girl, vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining at a nearby restaurant with friends. The McCanns were on vacation with a group of friends and their children.

The disappearance sparked an international search effort and a media frenzy, with attention focused on finding Madeleine and uncovering the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

The initial investigation by Portuguese authorities was criticized for its handling, with allegations of missteps and lack of coordination. Despite extensive searches and appeals for information, Madeleine's whereabouts remained unknown.

Various theories emerged over the years, including abduction by a stranger, accidental death followed by a cover-up, or involvement of the parents. The McCanns vehemently denied any involvement and campaigned tirelessly to keep Madeleine's case in the public eye.

In 2008, Portuguese police officially named Kate and Gerry McCann as suspects (arguidos) in their daughter's disappearance, but this status was later lifted due to lack of evidence.

In 2011, the case was reopened by Scotland Yard at the request of the British government, leading to a comprehensive review of evidence and a fresh investigation known as Operation Grange. Over the years, Operation Grange has pursued numerous leads and conducted interviews, but Madeleine's disappearance remained unsolved.

Then, in 2020 a new suspect emerged: Christian Brueckner.

Now, that man is on trial for unrelated crimes in Germany.

Let's take a look.
