A prince, desperate to marry a real princess, searches the world in vain. One stormy night, a drenched girl claiming to be a princess arrives at his castle. To test her, the queen places a pea under twenty mattresses and twenty down blankets. The next morning, the girl complains of a terrible night's sleep due to a hard object in the bed. This proves to the royal family that she is indeed a real princess, as only a true princess would be sensitive enough to feel the pea. The prince happily marries her, and the pea is put on display in the Royal Museum, symbolizing the girl's authenticity.
