Some of us have played pandemic for so long that the line between reality and fantasy-terror has evaporated. According to the San Francisco Chronicle and Washington Post, the newest BA.2.75 variant was named “Centaurus” not by the WHO, but by Twitter users. This means the new variant is essentially an Internet meme, a sigil, and an indication that the public has taken responsibility for prolonging a pandemic that many thought was over. They are now manufacturing their own mental enslavement to a virus not of the body but of the mind. Although we may consider ourselves strong, refusing to die from the plague, the narrative around the virus and it’s mutations also refuses to die. This is the sign of a parasite. It is furthermore appropriate that Centaurus belongs to the Hercules family of constellations beside Hydra and Corona. Just as the Blood Moon signified a wave of shootings, perhaps the recent Thunder Moon is an indication of a new wave of pandemic.
