Welcome to Daily Hot News, where we delve into the stories shaping the world. Today, we bring you a sobering look at the struggles of Ukraine’s war veterans. For many, the fight doesn’t end at the front lines—it continues at home, where bureaucratic obstacles stand between them and the support they desperately need.
A Veteran’s Plight:
On a cold, rainy day in Kyiv, 48-year-old Evhen Lomsky hobbles on crutches near a metro station exit. A sign hanging around his neck reads, “I’m hungry.” Lomsky’s journey from a soldier to a street beggar is a poignant symbol of the hardships faced by countless veterans in Ukraine.
Lomsky lost his right leg on September 17, 2023, when he stepped on a landmine while marching in Donetsk. "It was dusk; we were on the move. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion, and my leg was gone," recalls the former soldier from Mariupol.
Doctors amputated part of his right leg to prepare for a prosthetic, but his discharge from the hospital in mid-July marked the beginning of another battle—survival. Unable to find work and entangled in administrative delays to access veteran benefits, Lomsky has resorted to begging on Kyiv’s streets to make ends meet.
