TSC Talks had a chance to talk with Chiara Juster, Advocate and Strategic Counsel, Head of Government Affairs, Oaksterdam University, Host of High Tea Tuesdays on OU Instagram and Legal Advisor for The Last Prisoner Project, head counsel for Richard DeLisi (https://freedelisi.com).
From her bio:
“Chiara Juster is a social justice advocate and attorney. She advises Oaksterdam on government and policy matters and is OU’s liaison to DC; she represents the school as an active member of the National Cannabis Industry Association where she is in her second year on the Diversity Equity and Inclusion committee.
In addition to her work with Oaksterdam, Chiara is an advocate for reform, decarceration, cannabis & works on various policy matters. She was matched by Last Prisoner Project with the longest serving non-violent cannabis offender currently incarcerated in the United States, Richard DeLisi, who has been incarcerated since 1988. With gain time he is set to be released from his ninety year sentence in July, 2022, but that day may never come as Richard is older, in poor health, and in a prison experiencing a COVID19 out break. If you’d like this grandfather of five to live his days with his loving family please visit FreeDeLisi.com.
Chiara grew up in Portland, OR, though she was born in CA. She attended the University of Oregon where she received degrees in political science and sociology before attending the University of Miami School of Law. She realized as a young prosecutor that there was no such thing as prosecutorial discretion. Disheartened, she left the country & spent years traveling & learning, before returning stateside resolute on changing the laws. She is a graduate of Oaksterdam University & hosts High Tea Tuesdays on OU’s IG live where she discusses a Cannacopia of topics.”
Chiara starts off giving some background from a personal perspective:
“I was born in Northern California. But I grew up in Portland, Oregon, from the time I was a toddler, and ended up going to college in Oregon. in a state where cannabis had been decriminalized since 1973. I actually grew up in Earl Blumenauer’s district, I have one of his little pins behind me, he gives a nod on the hill. And when I went to University of Oregon, obviously cannabis had always been part of the culture in Eugene. When I then went to the University of Miami for law school, it was a whole different world, particularly when it came to drug policy, cannabis in particular, to harm reduction overall, and Community Investment”
