An ‘appeal to nature’ fallacy is the implication that because something is perceived as having some relationship with nature it must be desirable. Tell that to poison ivy, sumac, oak, hemlock, and all the rest. But this is the argument being used by Apeel Technology to sell their fruit and vegetable coating. Apeel promises to prevent food waste by coating produce with a concoction derived from grapeseed oil and composed of polyunsaturated fats, like Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids. When these are consumed in high quantities, though, or have a poor ratio with Omega-3 fatty acids, they increase inflammation, hormone imbalance, and promote obesity. However, there is a tremendous amount of misleading and hysteria-driven information being produced by both the company and its opponents who say that Bill Gates and the WEF are its the owner, and that they want to poison you. One ridiculous post said: “If you see the Apeel logo on any fruit and veg do not buy it, this is a Bill Gates and WEF company, this chemical makes things last 3x longer and cannot be washed off, in US and Canada at the moment.” First, the company has received 719 million dollars from Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Anne Wojcicki, the government of Singapore, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Secondly, the founder, James Rogers, was brought into the Young Global Leaders of the WEF eight years after founding the technology. Third, there are no chemicals, even if the concoction derived from fatty acids has not been tested. It was given “premarket approval” and a rubber stamp of Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA. It is likely that giving people more time to eat their produce will result in less overall being consumed, since there will be less of a rush to consume the fruits and vegetables in our kitchens. The fact that we throw out up to 40% of all produce is only true for one, people who buy produce, and two, for people already with access to such abundance. This is not about food waste or the environment then, it is about virtue signaling, making money, big business, and controlling the food supply.
