Nikki Kaelar, aka Varien, is an American composer and producer. She grew up listening to all genres of music, which allowed her to drum up inspiration from various cultures and styles. She incorporates these styles with her industrial, metal, orchestral, and ambient music. She’s been performing music since the age of 11 and has since released music on Monstercat and composed for movies and shows like 300: Rise of an Empire, Bones, The Purge: Anarchy, Face Off, America's Next Top Model, PlanetSide 2, and Monsters: Dark Continent.
Nikki and I talk about her production techniques, including subtractive EQ and making everything “net 0.” Nikki also shares why she draws inspiration from art and languages (she speaks Japanese fluently). Lastly, her hiatus and return from last year have greatly impacted her sound now, as well as some forthcoming collaborations.
