She is a Professor/Military Research Scholar and the Director of the Caring for the Caregiver Program at the UT Health Science Center San Antonio, School of Nursing. Her professional experience was inspired by her firsthand experience as the wife of a combat-wounded and Purple Heart Recipient Veteran. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author, researcher, and avid advocate for veterans’ health and the science of caregiving. She is passionate about what she does, and her goal is to dedicate her life and profession to contributing to science and helping wounded, ill and injured Veterans and their caregivers discover ways to thrive.

Collectively, they have pulled back the curtain on widowhood and shared their angst, challenges, and grief, as well as ways in which they have created new futures for themselves. Widowhood is a global story, and so is their book. Their relationship became personal in a hammam in Morocco. The book idea was envisioned in front of a fireplace overlooking the red rocks of Sedona. The manuscript was drafted, changed, edited, and reorganized in Maryland, Ohio, a rented home in Pittsburgh, and a condo in Panama City Beach.
