22 JUN 2023 · We often have questions from our listeners about color, so we figured it was time to do an episode dedicated to this topic and put out a post to our followers to send in any questions they had about wall color in particular and we had so many questions come in. It’s easy to follow trends and just do what everyone else is doing, but it doesn’t matter what someone’s top favorite color is because it could look terrible on you and you might hate it. This is the year of introspection and understanding what you’re drawn to, how you dress yourself, and figuring out who you are. This is something that we are all very passionate about here at Alice Lane, which is understanding these things while also being current about where art and design is in popular culture.
- Color 6:40
- The right things to do moving forward 9:00
- Developing an entire home palate 11:00
- Favorite paint colors 22:05
- Dark and moody colors 33:35
- Why some people are drawn to warm or cool tones 38:45
“There’s a reason why we’re exiting out of this cool, sad gray because we want to be happy. Covid was really hard on everybody, so this is your time to re-energize yourself because color is energy 100%.” 11:54

15 JUN 2023 · Sue had this epiphany the other day when we were driving down the road and talking about what to talk about on the podcast and she said she had a juicy one. Taste is an ever evolving thing that we should be feeding, which will continue to change and be molded over time as we are exposed to different things. Taste is subjective and really just uniquely developed for every person. We are asked to design people’s homes and interpret them through our lens, taking what taste notes we have on what pairs nicely with their story and creating an environment where they feel at home and that their taste has been reflected correctly. “Good taste is better than bad taste, but bad taste is better than no taste.”
- How to shape your taste 3:30
- Your taste evolves 7:25
- Genius creates and taste preserves 8:50
- Growing up and developing our own tastes 16:15
- The importance of finding people who support you 22:55
- You don’t need a lot of money to have good taste 24:50
“Just because you’re speaking in absolutes doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re right. I think that portrays confidence and people mistake confidence with having good opinions, and those are not necessarily synonymous with each other, although I think you have to have a level of confidence to be able to build your good taste.” 5:31

8 JUN 2023 · Today we’re doing a little podcast on metal finishes mainly from a listener question that we had come in, but we’ve also had a few of these hot topics in our own minds that we felt like we should solve, so we’re putting them all together and calling it ‘Metal Finishes.’ One of our listeners wanted to know our favorite finishes for cabinet knobs and poles, saying ‘polished nickel for plumbing? Thanks for any advice.’ We’ve been saying that silver is king from here on out, which we’re seeing in fashion and homes are following suit.
- Metal finishes 11:05
- Cabinet knobs and poles for polished nickel plumbing 13:40
- Different ways to finish metals 15:25
- Plated metal 20:30
- Different types of finishes 22:10
- Brass 24:30
- Nickel 29:40
- Bronze 33:50
“ I think that’s really good to know yourself in finishes, which is why we’re doing this podcast so that if you’re a perfectionist, you are not gonna want anything unlacquered. You’re gonna wanna know that that is stayed and true, and you are gonna really love lacquered brass, or you’re gonna love electro plated if it’s done very, very well, or even gold leafed.” 19:58

1 JUN 2023 · Sue met Amanda who was initially the organizer for a client that we’ve done several homes for and these have been the most organized spaces we’ve ever been in. She has a system and an art to it, and with her organization, it’s a business she’s done for 20 years and now she does estate liquidation, which ironically has a lot of commonalities. Summer break is about to begin and we’re going to be at that time of year when we turn into half the woman that we were as we lose our brains a little bit, so this can be a great opportunity to start to clean out and kind of inventory where we’re at and what we wanna add.
- Organizing closets 3:20
- Pantry and kitchen 12:25
- Getting into estate sales 20:20
- Emptying out the entire room 25:40
- Amanda’s posting frequency 37:30
- Celebrity projects 40:20
- Amanda’s handle 42:55
“People are always like ‘I need to buy more hangers’ and I’m like ‘No, you just need to purge your closet. You don’t need more hangers.’ Hangers in setting yourself up is like 120, or 180, or some people it might be 650, but once you run out, it’s like ‘OK I need to purge because my closet kind of hits a max at a certain point. And it’s not even a max of space, it’s just a max of your visual eye and function to find what you’re looking for.” 7:56

25 MAY 2023 · In this episode Sue and Jess had no idea what the episode would be about, only that Cori would ask them some questions and they’d have to answer on the spot. He asks them some fun what-would-you-rather type questions such as what color they would choose out of two options, or what type of living space they would prefer in their living room.

- Living space 7:40
- Your entire home being wood tile or stucco 11:00
- Instagram or pinterest? 13:05
- Books or magazines? 14:45
- Music room or library? 15:30
- Too small of rugs or 10 different exterior finishes? 16:25
- Big “Eat” sign or a big “Live, laugh, love” 18:45
- Stripes, florals, or plaid 19:50
- Lighting 23:20
- Worst fashion decision you’ve made 25:00
- The mountains or the beach? 29:30
- Rings or necklaces, nails and hair 33:00
- Drapery 38:40
- A trend you hope comes back 39:30
“Gloves. When were gloves out? Let’s bring it back!” “All the accouterments like the gloves, the hats, all the extras, the scarves.” “The collapsible gold cup that you’d take out of your purse and swallow a pill.” 41:32
