According to a 2017 article in Forbes magazine, "A global perspective makes for better leaders."
This episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast explores that concept in Emergency Management and Response as we hear from Brenden Winder from New Zealand.
Brenden is a City Councilmember and Emergency Management leader based in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
He brings two decades of experience to Emergency Management and leadership, specializing in earthquake readiness and response.
However, his expertise extends beyond earthquakes and disasters common to New Zealand.
This is reflected in this week's conversation, as he and John Scardena discuss the recent hurricanes in the southern United States.

"Don't mess with Texas" has been a popular slogan since 1985, yet, Mother Nature doesn't seem to listen as the Lone Star State frequently experiences hurricanes, flash floods, tornadoes, hailstorms, and windstorms.
Meteorologist John Honoré knows this well. He has been tracking weather in Texas since 1996, first as a television weather forecaster and now as a meteorologist with the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, John discusses how he collaborates with many different agencies to make sure Texans are ready for whatever major weather event comes their way.
As Florida and the Carolinas continue their recovery efforts from recent hurricanes, John also reflects on major storms he has forecasted and helped respond to in Texas, namely Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

An iconic line from the award-winning drama, “The West Wing” perfectly describes this week’s guest on the Disaster Tough Podcast.
“This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars.”
As a retired Colonel in the US Air Force, Kim “KC” Campbell flew 1,800+ hours and 100+ combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan during 24 years of service as a fighter pilot and senior military leader.
Her efforts earned her the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism in 2003 after recovering her battle-damaged A-10 Warthog aircraft during an intense support mission.
Since retiring from the Air Force, Colonel Campbell has focused on family life and helping build future leaders as an author and keynote speaker.
Her best-selling book, "Flying in the Face of Fear: A Fighter Pilot's Lessons on Leading with Courage" shares vital lessons for organizations about leadership and decision-making.
In this episode, she shares some of the insights from the book along with other leadership and service lessons learned during her time in the military and beyond.
Colonel Campbell’s book can be found online at https://kim-kc-campbell.com/book/ and other websites and stores where books are sold.

A true passion for Emergency Management is best manifested when one has it for the readiness or "front end" side of things instead of ONLY the response side.
This week's guest in the Disaster Tough Podcast, Chris Housely explains why this concept is important for Emergency Managers to understand.
As an emergency management specialist with the US Air Force, Chris also brings more than a decade of experience working as a first responder and flight medic before transitioning to the world of EM.
In this episode, she and host John Scardena talk about how one can be "strategically tactical" in preparing and responding to various disasters, and how the origins of the Emergency Management field trace back to the need for First Responders to have someone looking out for them.
They also reminisce about how a chance photo encounter in Baltimore has led to this week's important conversation.

NOTE: This episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast was recorded soon after the FIRST assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. As such, it does NOT address the September 15 incident outside a Florida golf course.
"Proactive beats reactive (any day of the week) and twice on Sunday."
This quote from former Secret Service Agent, Kevin Dye rings true in the world of Emergency Management, and in his area of expertise, Executive Protection and Threat Assessment.
Kevin brings this perspective to this week's episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast.
As the United States counts down the days to the 2024 Presidential Election, and recent attempts on the life of former President Donald Trump, perspectives from longtime professionals in this space become more and more relevant each day.
Kevin started his career in the Air Force, serving in military law enforcement domestically and abroad, including being deployed during Desert Storm.
After retiring from the military, he moved on to law enforcement, starting as a police officer, and eventually landing a position as a Supervisory Special Agent with the US Secret Service working on two Presidential Details.
Kevin has since moved on to the world of education and private-sector Executive Protection.
In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, Kevin shares the many lessons he has learned as a leader and professional in Executive Protection and Threat Assessment.

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."
This quote from Helen Keller personifies the relationship agencies need to get effective information out during times of crisis.
Amy Forsythe, a Public Affairs Officer for the U.S. Navy knows this well.
Amy brings more than three decades of experience in military journalism and media relations to the table. Having reported from all over the world, she has worked to create effective messaging and reporting during a variety of crises and incidents.
In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, she shares some of those experiences including, among others, being on the frontlines of active shooter situations on military bases, the Cuban Rafter Crisis where thousands of Cubans fled their home country using makeshift rafts and boats en route to the United States.
She and host, John Scardena also dive into the mind of media professionals as they create messaging during times of crisis, including analyzing their coverage of the recent assassination attempt of former President, Donald Trump.
Amy has also worked to educate the next generation of media professionals as an adjunct professor and author. Her book, "Heroes Live Here: A Tribute to Camp Pendleton Marines Since 9/11" takes readers inside the heroic work of Camp Pendleton Marines in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.
