Around the middle of the eighteenth century, the skilled painters of the Hannong factory in Strasbourg created one of the most successful decorations of the whole century: the “rose” ornamentation. The decoration, also known as “Strasbourg style”, quickly spread throughout Europe, influencing the decorative repertoire of the most important manufactures of the eighteenth century. A few confident brushstrokes draw the refined floral decoration, which is distinguished by a large rose flanked by tulips and other small European flowers, painted in brilliant “small fire” colours, a firing technique also known as “third fire”, perfected and started for the first time in Europe in Strasbourg around 1745.
