It certainly appears that the old town has returned to the days of packed streets prior to the pandemic. I'm in Hoi An with an up-to-date report on the ancient town, its sites, and what it's like to visit one of Vietnam's top destinations. I have some tips on where you can avoid the crowds and some other things you'll want to know especially if it's your first visit.

Once you master these and the last 5 in a previous episode you'll be much better prepared. As a disclaimer, there are similiar things to watch out for in other countries in the region and beyond. In some cases like the cyclo driver scams, knowing what to expect can save you several dollars and a really uncomfortable experience. In this episode I also share some sounds from a Vietnamese funeral and review what happens during the 3 day ceremony that during your travels you may witness.

26 JUN 2023 · It's finally happening! Vietnam's National Assembly agreed to extend the current 30 day tourist eVisa to 90 days for 80 countries. This will be the first time 90 day visas will be available to tourists since early 2020. This is welcome news to the tourism industry and thousands of people who in the past enjoyed long-term stays in Vietnam. Nha Trang and Da Nang will most likely see the biggest growth in tourism and extended stays. In this podcast what we know so far. More details to come.

23 JUN 2023 · In this episode I run down 5 common mistakes or uncomfortable situations you can avoid on your first trip to Vietnam. Some could be considered scams or overcharging, in other cases just minor uncomfortable situtations that can be easily avoided. We've all been scammed or overcharged at least once on our travels. I remember I was overcharged for a speedboat ride to the Gili Islands by what I thought were friendly staff in the hotel I was staying at in Bali many years ago. They are situations that can easily put a damper on, or in extreme cases ruin a trip. In Vietnam, there are several examples of overcharging, or misunderstandings, that typically take place around tourist attractions or areas where visitors tend to spend alot of time in. Knowing what to expect can help you avoid these uncomfortable scenarios.

In this episode I'll review the current visas that are offered in Vietnam and the upcoming proposal to return to 90 day visas as well as the extending of visa exemption stays for many countries.
Honestly, I did not plan to be off this long from the podcast but days turn into weeks, which turn into months. I feel the time off has given me a second wind to create more and better episodes. Again, I appreciate your patience and will in the future, endeavour to bring you high quality episodes of The Far East Travels Podcast.

My friend and longtime guest of the podcast photographer Bruno Black gives us an update on what's new and what to expect when you arrive. Bruno has toured many people around the island and is an expert on the best places to see as well as knowing where to go to get those great shots. 31 OCT 2022 · After 2.5 years both Taiwan and Japan are fully open to independant tourism. In this episode I share more details about requirements upon arrival, particularily for the more complicated procedures for Taiwan. As someone who lived in Taiwan I am very happy for the many businesses who relied and of course benefited from foreign visitors. Taipei was a meeting place almost every weekend for travelers from around East and Southeast Asia. I can't imagine what the toll from the pandemic has left on some of these restaurants, cafes, and markets, if in fact they were able to survive this tragedy.

12 FEB 2020 · Thanks again for your support. A short broadcast and update from the famous Ta Prohm or "Tomb Raider" Temple of the Angkor Archeological Site. This temple gained world acclaim when it was featured in scenes from the film Lara Croft Tomb Raider released in 2001 starring Angelina Jolie. It's one of my favorites simply from the fusion of it's form of sophisticated Khmer temple architecture and enveloping forest/jungle. One of the most unique places I've ever visited. Unfortunately on this trip I wasn't able to make it out to the more more temples that still show the signs of being succumbed by the forces of Mother Nature. Thanks for listening. 23 DEC 2019 · Just a quick update from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I picked up a cold, a little Christmas going away gift from Saigon just before I left for Cambodia. So I'm finally at 100% again ready to share more stories, and advice from Phnom Penh. This will be my home most likely until the new year. My original plan was to only stay here for a few days before moving on to Siem Reap but after further investigation and research I decided to stay here awhile longer and avoid the crowds that will descend upon SR for the Christmas holiday week. Kampot was another choice but again it appears vacation goers and locals will be heading for the coast including Ko Rong Island and Kep. I think I was somewhat spoiled over the past few years spending my Christmas' in Taipei and thus avoiding crazy holiday goers and people looking to blow off year-end steam while on vacation in Asia. This is just a quick update but I will be bringing you more behind the scenes and extras I won't be sharing soon on the regular episode. 1 DEC 2019 · Thanks again for your support! As I was getting up this morning I heard the sounds of Buddhist chanting from the street level where I'm currently staying in Saigon. Typically you'll hear and see these rituals when someone has died. A Buddhist funeral in Vietnam typically lasts 3 days. As I couldn't see any family partaking in the ritual, they're usually dressed in white and wearing white bandanas I assumed that the person at this residence/business had just died. Since first coming to Asia I have been fascinated with the way people treat death, in most countries it is a public event. Very unlike the behind closed doors of a funeral home like in Western countries. In this private episode I thought I would share with you some of the sounds of the beginning of a funeral here in Vietnam. It's actually quite sobering to see death ritualized or celebrating in public. A reminder that our time here is short and precious.

11 NOV 2019 · Thanks again for your support! I coming to you from Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Saigon, Vietnam on a wonderfully dry night. It seems like local officials have made this area of the city even more pedestrian friendly by eliminating traffic on either side of the walking street on weekend evenings. This is a real luxury in a city that lives on and by their motorbikes. It is one of the few cities in Southeast Asia outside of Vietnam where you see very few people walking. Perhaps this will change with the introduction of the underground subway and train system here proposed to start next year. This might be the only place and time where you can really relax and take in the surrounding sites without motorbikes darting in and around you.

9 OCT 2019 · Thanks again for your support. Dropping in after my walking tour of the Co Bac/Co Giang street food area of Saigon. In this private podcast I take a walk down the Bui Vien Walking Street. Normally it's a little more challenging to share walking around this area as the bars play their music at high volume levels making it easy for music publishers to track their copywrited songs. It makes it a little easier to share this experience more freely in a private podcast then publicly. To be perfectly frank these kind of places don't interest me too much unless I'm being social with people that are visiting. This backpacker district is one of the wildest in Southeast Asia so if you are up for an adventure it's an interesting place to hang out!

I will also share some more personal happenings and thoughts that I might not share right away on the public episodes. After my recent visa run trip to Cambodia I realized that I can allow myself more freedom to move around the region if I can let go of a base. When I first moved to Asia almost 6 years ago it was important to me at the time to have a home base that I could go home to after traveling on the road for several weeks at a time. But now the freedom has become more important than the security of having a base. I wanted to share this with you first as I will be leaving Saigon this fall and moving over to Cambodia for possibly a few months. Acturally I will no doubt divide my time between the two countries but having spent the last 7 months is Saigon it's time for a change. I will also be traveling from South to North in Vietnam in December stopping along the way in Hoi An, and Hanoi. I will have lots to share and new perspective on these places.
