  • Paid Sick Leave for Nebraskans turns in signatures for November

    27 JUN 2024 · A group campaigning for paid sick leave for Nebraskans announced Thursday it has collected 138,000 signatures through its petition drive, which would be enough to put the issue on the ballot in November. If passed, the initiative would require businesses in Nebraska to offer at least one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours an employee worked. Jo Giles, a ballot sponsor for Paid Sick Leave for Nebraskans, says the accomplishment is the result of years of organizing and strategizing.

  • Eastern Nebraska braces for Missouri River flood crest

    26 JUN 2024 · Floodwaters continue to rise in Omaha and Bellevue as the Missouri River crest flows southward this week. The NRD has closed slide gates and culverts that empty into rivers and installed a flood wall barrier along railroad tracks in Bellevue. Winkler says water levels should begin to subside by Sunday.

To pay for the plan, Pillen says he wants to broaden the tax base through the elimination of sales tax exemptions.

  • U.S. Senate passes bill returning land to Winnebago Tribe

    24 JUN 2024 · The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bill to transfer land along the Missouri River in Iowa back to the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. The Winnebago Land Transfer Act returns 16-hundred acres to the tribe after it was seized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1970s for a proposed recreation project. Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer, who introduced the bill, says the Corps was wrong to take the land through eminent domain.

The meeting represents the launch of the “6 regions, One Nebraska” initiative in the southeast part of the state.   • SBA opens disaster loan outreach center in Blair

    19 JUN 2024 · Residents of Douglas and Washington Counties are eligible for business physical disaster loans and home disaster loans to replace damaged property. Nebraskans from Burt, Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy, Saunders and Washington Counties qualify for economic injury disaster loans which help small businesses meet financial obligations impacted by the April storms. The deadline for physical damage loan applications is July 15, while the economic injury loan applications are available through February 2025.
