12 NOV 2021 · You must have heard about Anti-D injection being given to pregnant women. Ever wondered what is it for? And if not given what could be the complications and health implications for the baby. We will try to understand why and how this happens and why should you be aware of your own and your partner's Rh status by going in for Pre-Marriage health screening before you get married.
Blood group compatibility is important not only in blood transfusions, it has far more significance in pregnancy and child birth, especially, Rh incompatibilty between the mother and the baby’s blood, when there can be a risk of severe complications, which can even be life threatening for the unborn or the new born.
When  the mother is Rh –ive but the father is Rh +ive, there are chances that baby’s blood will be Rh +ive. Due to the incompatible bloods, the baby’s red blood cells, will be attacked and destroyed by mother’s immune system, resulting in their breakdown (hemolysis), leading to anemia and jaundice which if not treated can cause brain damage, heart failure and even death of the baby.
Pre-marriage health screening is one way to prevent this risk when through blood typing for ABO and Rh antigen, you will be aware that this type of pregnancy is high risk and proper pre natal care and monitoring is required throughout the pregnancy period.
