13 AUG 2018 · This is episode 2 of the podcast and my guest today is Ms. Denise Jennison
Public Education is Denise's passion. She has served as a public education advocate for the past thirty years. A few short weeks ago she was hired as the San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s new Communications Specialist. In this position she will support the District’s complex and ever-changing needs in managing communications. From social media to district-wide communications, to site specific assistance. Just prior to this new position, Denise was a Governing Board Member of SRVUSD from 2010-2018. She believes that a strong public education system is the cornerstone of a strong democracy. She lives with her husband in the San Ramon Valley, which is where they raised their four sons. They all attended local public schools. Both of her parents were public school teachers. She has made it her life’s work to find a way to elevate public education to its rightful place in our society so that every child has an opportunity to succeed.
I think you will really enjoy our conversation as Denise addresses the challenging roll of a board of education trustee. How she became such a strong advocate for education, some of the key leadership skills she has developed along the way, and how you can get involved in supporting our local school district. I present to you Ms. Denise Jennison!

6 AUG 2018 · This is The Power in the Valley Podcast where we connect the San Ramon Valley and strengthen the bond of our community one conversation at a time. I am your host, Demetrius Ball. Thank you for joining me on this journey of connection, leadership, and service. This is Episode 1 of the show and I’ll be giving you a brief explanation of why I have created this podcast and what you can expect each episode. First of all, you need to know a little bit about me. I have been a resident of the San Ramon Valley for just over 3 years now. I live in San Ramon with my family, my wonderful wife, four amazing children, and my mom. I work in the community and my children attend school in the community, and we love it here. I love studying and practicing leadership. I see myself as a servant leader. Whatever organization or group I’m involved with I focus on how I can contribute to moving us forward. I think that’s the focus that the best leaders have, not focusing on fulfilling their personal goals or making a certain amount of money or aquiring the C-suite title or how many people report to them. The best leaders focus on how they can make the people they work with and the community that they live in better. Simply put the best leaders focus on others.
I am also a huge consumer of podcasts. I love the storytelling nature of this medium and the ability to every week hear the voice of the hosts and their guests. It makes me feel like I’m part of their family. It is one thing to read about a topic, but when you can actually hear the voices of the subject matter experts, I feel like it brings so much more meaning to the content. This podcast is focused on telling the story of our community through the lens of some of it’s top leaders. Leaders in formal title, and leaders in everyday life that are setting the example for others to follow as well.
Each guest will share a bit about their current organization, the journey into their current community or business leadership role, some of the most important skills that they’ve developed on their path, and finally they will tell us how we can connect with them and support their particular organization or other organizations that they know are serving our community.
As a working adult in the San Francisco Bay Area, it is so easy to get caught up in the daily grind of work and family responsibilities without realizing the amazing people, wealth of knowledge, captivating stories, and skills that our neighbors possess. We each have a particular set of skills and resources that the members of our community desperately need. I’m here to help tell our story as a citizen in the San Ramon Valley. I’m here to help connect us. I’m here to help give the opportunity for all of us to make a positive impact.
I’m going to end this episode with this quote by author Max Patrick, from his book Embracing Prosperity By Changing Your Mind: Tap Into Prosperity by Tapping Into You, because I think it does a great job on encapsulating what I hope to accomplish with this show. “The power to shape your reality lies within you, therefore the most important voice you will ever hear is your own.”
I hope to Inspire and Empower the citizens of The Valley by hearing our collective voices. I want us to get to know our neighbors, to get involved with our local organizations, or even to create our own, and to use our power to shape the direction of our community.
Thank you again for joining this journey. We’ll see you next time as we explore The Power in the Valley!
