Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle

  • 65. Fringes, Nuggies & Schadenfreude - Ocean Denham 5 Tiny Joys

19 MAY 2024 · This week I'm joined by Auckland based stand up comedian Ocean Denham and she brought 5 tiny joys to the show. We ended up getting into some great tangents about entertaining children, being labeled the "picky" eater as a kid, and why whenever you have a fringe, it's a sign that things aren't going well. (I currently have a fringe) Ocean has a show coming up in the NZ Comedy fest called A Hot Girl And Her Suzuki Swift, grab tickets for it https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/a-hot-girl-and-her-suzuki-swift/ and you can follow Ocean on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/oceandenham_comedy/. Check out either, Ocean is really freaking funny. Ocean Denham's 10 Tiny Joys - When i see someone happy / passionate about something - When a baby waves at me - When I pull my chicken nuggets out of the air fryer before it dings and they're the right amount of crispy - Seeing someone who was mean to me at high school get a fringe and the fringe is awful - When you plan an outfit in your head and it turns out as good as you imagined

  • 63. What it's been like working as a full time comedian for a year

5 MAY 2024 · It's just over a week since a year to the day I left my previous job to work as a comedian full time. It's been a year of ups and downs and I've learnt a lot, most of which I tried to document in this episode of the podcasts. The questions I covered: - Did I make any money this year? - How much of my runway have I used? - How has my lifestyle changed? - How are my hands doing? My health in general? - How is the podcast doing? I also talked about these observations: - Being a freelance entertainer is all about maintaining relationships, and weeding out the people who aren’t worth your time. - Waiting for venues / companies to pay you can be a nightmare - You need to be on top of your calendar / schedule, and be thinking ahead. You will get very frustrated with other people’s lack of organisation - You’re not obligated to reply to people straight away - You’re going to feel like you’re shouting into the void a lot - You might find planning activities outside of work too exhausting to bother with - Every day is different. You’ll experience some of the weirdest gigs and jobs that you never saw yourself doing - You’re going to experience hella ups and downs. You’ll feel like you’re taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back a lot. - You have to put yourself out there - you will experience growth from this - You will often need to spend money to make money - You will really quickly learn the value of your work, and hearing “no” will no longer be devastating - You will probably still have a lot of sleepless nights - You will feel a new type of satisfaction having paid your bills off the back of your art

  • 62. Portable Buffets, Knee Injuries & Ultra Running w/ Comedian Chris Ingham

28 APR 2024 · Stoked to be finally sitting down with Chris Ingham, a comedian from the Manawatū region of NZ and chatting about Ultra Marathon Running. I have an aunt and uncle who are into this so it was great to chat with someone about it. Don't think I'll be partaking in it any time soon, although I've been training to try and hit the city 2 surf 6km run next year! Chris is one of the deadliest gag merchants in NZ and it was a pleasure to have him on the show. Find Chris online on https://www.facebook.com/SJWChris and https://www.instagram.com/lol_gallagher/ for more! You can read my review from Bad Apple https://badapple.gay/2024/04/04/panic-at-the-buffet-a-response/ in full too.

  • 58. 90's Anime Nostalgia

31 MAR 2024 · In this episode, I ramble about my nostalgia for the way I used to watch anime back in the 90s during my childhood, and then in the wake of Akira Toriyama's passing I talk about my memories of DragonBall and why it was a meaningful series to me. This one ended up being a lot longer than I expected, and there's still so much more I'd love to cover, so if you'd listen to more Anime themed episodes then let me know on the Patreon group or other social media and if there's any demand for it I'll definitely do more! Rest In Peace, Toriyama Sensei.
