2 NOV 2020 · Angelena attended the #MeToo March in Toronto, Canada on the 2nd of December, 2017. Alathea Milne-Hines decided to take the hashtag — which flooded social media this fall after millions of women shared their experience with sexual assault — to the streets. The young woman is behind Toronto’s #MeToo March, one of several planned in cities including Los Angeles and Vancouver after the hashtag started trending. It’s based on activist Tarana Burke’s movement that began more than a decade ago with an eye to empowering survivors who are women of colour, and was recently revived by actress Alyssa Milano as sexual assault allegations swirled around Hollywood heavyweight Harvey Weinstein. Milano put out an open call to women survivors to change their status. Within days, #MeToo was shared millions of times on Facebook and Twitter and had reached dozens of countries. That virtual momentum is now reaching Toronto’s streets, in an example of online activism morphing into a more traditional form of protest. But some question whether such movements born of social media have the power to effect real political change.
