  • Ep 135 - Warrior's Journey: From the Battlefield to Advocacy with Michael 'Rod' Rodriguez

    1 DEC 2023 · GUEST BIO Michael “Rod” Rodriguez is the President and CEO of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Foundation. Rod joined the U.S. Army in 1992 and attended the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course to become a Green Beret in 1997. In 2013, he was medically retired due to numerous combat injuries. His last assignment as a Green Beret came as a Sniper Instructor assigned to the JFK Special Warfare Center (Range 37) at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He has deployed ten times in service to our nation. Rod’s involvement with the GWOT Memorial Foundation began in 2016 when he joined the organization as a board member in support of the Foundation’s sole mission to construct a Memorial on the National Mall that appropriately honors the profound service and sacrifices of all who served in America’s longest war. Rod later led the organization as President and CEO from March 2018 to September 2020 before taking a leave of absence for a personal matter and overseas deployment. He was re-appointed President and CEO in December 2021. From 2015-2018, Rod served as a member of President George W. Bush’s Military Service Initiative Advisory Council, advising, and supporting the President and leadership of the Bush Institute on strategies and programs to support veterans and their families. In 2013, Rod was appointed as a Fellow of the Manhattan-based Explorers Club, an international organization dedicated to the advancement of scientific exploration and inquiry, for his research on traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress. In August of 2021, Rod directly assisted in evacuating U.S. allied personnel and their families from Afghanistan, and he continues to provide support for their resettlement. He helps several other non-profits in both veteran and non-veteran spaces. He also provides leadership advice and training to local, state, and national government agencies, corporations, and private businesses. Rod holds a B.S. in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis and an M.A. in Diplomacy with a concentration in International Conflict Management, both from Norwich University. As an artist who works with metal, Rod is a passionate advocate for the power of art to heal, connect, and inspire us all. In addition to being part of several private collections including the British Royal Family, his work has been exhibited at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Rod also works with the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Forces initiative. Rod is a New Mexico native who comes from a family with a strong tradition of military service. Both his grandfathers served during World War II, and his father is a Vietnam veteran. His eldest son is currently serving with the 82nd Airborne Division and has deployed twice, one of which was to the same regions of Afghanistan as Rod. Rod is a committed outspoken advocate for veterans and their families and often speaks publicly on the need to increase understanding of life experiences between the civilian and military communities.   • EP 134 - They Call Him Nasty - Rear Admiral Mike Manazir

    10 NOV 2023 · GUEST BIO Rear Adm. Mike Manazir entered the U.S. Naval Academy from Mission Viejo, California, and graduated in 1981. He earned his naval aviation wings in April 1983 and deployed in the F-14A in July 1984. Manazir commanded the Tomcatters of Fighter Squadron 31 from June 1997 to September 1998, USS Sacramento (AOE1) from January 2003 to July 04, USS Nimitz (CVN 68) from March 2007 to August 2009 and Carrier Strike Group 8 embarked in USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) from September 2011 to June 2013. Prior to squadron command, his afloat tours included service as a fighter pilot and landing signal officer aboard various aircraft carriers on the west coast. Following Navy Nuclear Power Training, Manazir served as the executive officer of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) from July 2001 to December 2002. Ashore, Manazir served as an action officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, on the chief of naval operations staff as F-14 requirements officer and for the commander, Naval Air Forces as the assistant chief of staff for readiness. As a flag officer, Manazir served as director, strike aircraft, weapons and carrier programs on the chief of naval operations staff (N880) from August 2009 to September 2011 and on the chief of naval operations staff as the director, air warfare, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N98) from July 2013 to May 2016. Manazir qualified in the F-14A/D and F/A-18E/F aircraft and has flown more than 3,750 hours and 1,200 arrested landings during 15 deployments aboard aircraft carriers on both coasts. Manazir served as the deputy chief of naval operations for warfare systems, OPNAV N9, on the staff of the chief of naval operations. In this capacity, he was responsible for the integration of manpower, training, sustainment, modernization, research and development and procurement of the Navy’s warfare systems. Manazir is the recipient of various personal and campaign awards including the Legion of Merit (six awards), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards) and the Strike/Flight Air Medal (two awards).     3 NOV 2023 · Guest Bio Jon Macaskill, MMT, is a Navy SEAL Commander turned mindfulness and meditation teacher. He is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and holds a Master’s degree in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School. Jon has served in Iraq, Afghanistan, off the coast of Somalia, and in Panama. He also runs a consulting business that brings mindfulness and meditation to high performing teams to aid in dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression, all while increasing focus, creativity, and productivity. He also serves as the Deputy Executive Director for Veteran’s PATH, a non-profit organization that works to introduce meditation and mindfulness to veterans to bring them a sense of peace, acceptance, transformation, and honor. Jon’s wife also served in the Navy and is now a civilian Orthopedic Physician Assistant in Virginia Beach. They are both proud parents of two small children and currently live as a family in Chesapeake, Virginia.
