Gaining fat is frequently caused by hormonal imbalances and deficiencies that cause greater fat storage and less lean mass. Lean mass consists of organ and muscle mass and these tissues burn calories; fat and water in the body do not burn fat. Retaining lean mass is essential for longterm weight loss and hormones are partly responsible for building lean mass. The adrenal hormone DHEA (dehydroepiandosterone) and testosterone are both anabolic hormones that help maintain lean mass so that the metabolic rate of the body remains high causing continuous buring of fat stores. Aging, inflammation, nutritional issues, certain medications, poor diet, stress, sleep issues (i.e, sleep apnea) are just some of the conditions that are frequently associated with reduced productin of the sex hormones DHEA and testosterone and this "stressed physiology" is often accompanied by increased cortiisol levels that further promote fat retention particularly in the stomach and waiste areas. Join Dr. Michael Wald, The BloodDetective, as he discusses how to naturally balance deminishing hormone levels prototing body retention of lean mass and thus increased metabolic weight for longterm health and fat-burning.
