We are in an unprecedented time of tremendous activism with a spotlight on racial inequities, systemic racism, stemming from institutional miscarriages of justice based on a flawed ideal of white supremacy and senseless murders of black people. During this time, as the Assistant Chaplain for Muslim Life, I am charged with offering outlets and safe spaces for our student community.



What: In that spirit, we are welcoming you to engage and participate in a panel discussion titled Art and Sacred Activism brought to you in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and the Program in Islamic Studies. Specifically developed for the Johns Hopkins University Muslim Association (JHUMA) and our entire Hopkins student community.

Imam Dawud Walid will be sharing insights from his book "Towards Sacred Activism." We are asking the artists on the panel to speak on the power of art as a medium for activism and social change. Anika Sabree will be sharing her renowned piece that became a Black Lives Matter meme in 2016. Khalid Sabree will be sharing some of his artistic pieces that address race, systemic injustice, and triumph while grounded in Al-Islam. Native Baltimore filmmaker Ayanna Sharif will be joining us to discuss the power of art in film.
