Story Transcript:

He: תוחלת יום קיץ נושב, בעיר שהקיץ בה אינו מתפרנס מעולם, תל אביב. דוד, חייל משוחרר רעב, הלך לכיוון של שוק הכרמל, בחיפוש אחר פלאפל. אינדיקה של מוזיקה ערבית וריהוט הולך דרך האוויר טבעו בחלל שהחזיק בלבו. דוד המשיך ללכת, לאחר מספר רגעים, עמדה לפניו גריל קטן של פלאפל - "פלאפל הכרמל".
En: The hope of a summer day was blowing in the city where summer never ends, Tel Aviv. David, a hungry discharged soldier, walked towards the Carmel Market in search of falafel. The indication of Arabic music and the aroma of grills wafting through the air sank into the space that held his heart. David continued walking, following the smells of food in the market and within moments, a small falafel stand opened up before him - "Falafel Hakarmel".

He: אולם, לדוד, שהתרגל ממש לא מזמן לדיבור באנגלית באופן יומיומי, הוא מצא את כוח הביטוי שלו בעברית מעט מבלבל. הוא עמד שם, מבלבל את המלצר באמצעות תנודות ירייתיות עם ידו, בינתיים שמאמץ להרכיב מילים מובנות בשפתו.
En: But for David, who had recently become accustomed to speaking English on a daily basis, he found his ability to express himself in Hebrew a bit confusing. He stood there, gesturing to the waiter with jerky movements of his hand, meanwhile struggling to form coherent words in his language.

He: "אני רוצה..." ניסה דוד להשלים את המשפט, אבל המילה "פלאפל" נתקעה בראשו. "אני רוצה..." חזר וחזר דוד, מנסה למצוא את המילה הנכונה. אולם, במקום "פלאפל", המילה "גמל" יצאה ברצון.
En: "I want..." David tried to complete the sentence, but the word "falafel" stuck in his head. "I want..." David repeated, trying to find the right word. However, instead of "falafel", the word "camel" came out in a frenzy.

He: "אתה בטוח, צעיר?" שאל המלצר במבט מבולבל.
En: "Are you sure, young man?" the waiter asked, looking puzzled.

He: מבולבל, דוד היה בהלם לרגע. "לא, לא... לא גמל... פלאפל..." הוא ניסה שוב, מתעדכן תחת לחץ.
En: Confused, David was stunned for a moment. "No, no... not camel... falafel..." he tried again, adjusting under pressure.

He: לבסוף, המלצר נפנה אל דוד עם חיוך מחמיא. "אולי, צעיר, זה לא גמל שאתה יודע, זה ‘פלא’ של הפלאפל?"
En: Finally, the waiter turned to David with a flattering smile. "Maybe, young man, it's not a camel you know, it's the 'wonder' of falafel?"

He: דוד, כמובן, הבין מהר את הטעות שלו, נקט בצחוק, והזמין את הפלאפל שלו בעברית מושלמת. הסיפור הזה התפשט בשוק והעניק לו מספר בדיחות ששום מילת גמל לא יכולה להתמודד.
En: David, of course, quickly realized his mistake, chuckled, and ordered his falafel in perfect Hebrew. This story spread in the market and provided him with a number of jokes where no camel word could compete.

He: מאז, כל פעם שדוד מזמין פלאפל בתל אביב, הוא מזכיר לעצמו להפך - שהוא יודע לזהות פלאפל בעברית טובה, ולא צריך לחפש לו גמלים.
En: Since then, every time David orders falafel in Tel Aviv, he reminds himself to turn it around - that he knows how to identify falafel in good Hebrew, and doesn't need to look for camels.
