The Scarlet Scarf

Detective Lila Novak stood over the lifeless body of James Blackwell, a wealthy businessman found dead in his study. The only clue was a scarlet scarf wrapped tightly around his neck. Lila noticed the scarf's intricate pattern, recognizing it as a rare design from a local boutique.

Interviewing the family, Lila learned that James had a strained relationship with his wife, Evelyn, and his two adult children, Marcus and Sophia. Evelyn claimed she was at a charity event during the murder, while Marcus and Sophia said they were at their respective apartments.

At the boutique, Lila discovered that only three scarves with that pattern had been sold recently. One belonged to the victim, while the other two were purchased by Evelyn and Sophia.

Lila searched the family's trash and found a receipt for a plane ticket to Paris in Sophia's name, dated for the day after the murder. Confronting Sophia, Lila revealed her theory: Sophia had planned to flee the country after killing her father for his inheritance.

Sophia confessed, explaining that she had snuck into the house during the charity event and strangled her father with her scarf. She then planted her mother's scarf to frame her.

As Sophia was led away in handcuffs, Lila couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness for the broken family, torn apart by greed and deception.
