2 SEP 2024 · The Locked Room
Detective Sarah Thompson stood in the center of the lavish bedroom, her eyes scanning the scene. The lifeless body of millionaire philanthropist Victor Blackwell lay on the floor, a single gunshot wound to his head. The door was locked from the inside, and the windows were secured with no signs of forced entry.
Sarah turned to the three suspects gathered in the room: Victor's wife, Olivia; his business partner, Marcus; and his personal assistant, Emma. Each had a motive, but none had an alibi.
Olivia, tears streaking her face, sobbed, "I can't believe he's gone. We had our issues, but I loved him."
Marcus, visibly shaken, added, "Victor and I had our disagreements, but I would never harm him."
Emma, her voice trembling, insisted, "I was with him all day. I don't know how this could have happened."
Sarah examined the gun on the floor. It belonged to Victor and had his fingerprints on it. She noticed a small, peculiar detail: a single red thread stuck in the gun's trigger guard.
Suddenly, Sarah's eyes widened. She approached Emma and asked, "Emma, may I see your scarf?"
With a confused expression, Emma handed over her red cashmere scarf. Sarah carefully examined it and found a small tear, perfectly matching the thread on the gun.
Sarah turned to the group and announced, "I know who killed Victor Blackwell. It was you, Emma."
Emma's face paled. "What? No! I would never—"
Sarah interrupted, "You were with Victor all day, giving you the perfect opportunity. You knew he kept a gun in his desk. When he wasn't looking, you took it, wrapped your scarf around it to muffle the sound, and shot him. In your haste, a thread from your scarf caught on the trigger guard. You then staged the scene to look like a suicide, locking the door and placing the gun near his body."
Emma's shoulders slumped in defeat. "He was going to fire me. I couldn't lose this job. I'm sorry."
As the police led Emma away, Sarah felt a mix of satisfaction and sadness. Another mystery solved, but at what cost?
