Story Transcript:

Ja: 木々の間にかくれた神社——それは青木ヶ原の森の奥にありました。
En: A hidden shrine among the trees—it lay deep within the forest of Aokigahara.

Ja: この神社は、ほとんどの人に知られていません。
En: This shrine was known to very few people.

Ja: しかし、ここに毎晩、不思議な足音が聞こえるという話がありました。
En: However, there was a story that mysterious footsteps could be heard every night.

Ja: ユキはこの話を聞いて、神社に行くことを決めました。
En: Yuki heard this tale and decided to visit the shrine.

Ja: 彼女は心配でしたが、好奇心が勝ちました。
En: She was worried but her curiosity won out.

Ja: 夜が深くなると、ユキは懐中電灯を持って、青木ヶ原の森に入りました。
En: As the night grew deeper, Yuki entered Aokigahara forest with a flashlight in hand.

En: She then saw a small light among the trees.

En: Following the light, she found a small altar.

Ja: その前に一人の老人が座っていました。
En: In front of it sat an elderly man.

Ja: 「こんばんは、ユキさん。」老人は微笑みました。
En: "Good evening, Yuki," the old man smiled.

Ja: ユキは驚きましたが、老人の顔には見覚えがありませんでした。
En: Yuki was surprised but did not recognize his face.

Ja: 「どうして私の名前を知っているのですか？」ユキは驚いて聞きました。
En: "How do you know my name?" Yuki asked in surprise.

Ja: 「私はこの神社の守り神です。
En: "I am the guardian spirit of this shrine.

Ja: 毎晩、この足音が君を驚かせてしまったことをお詫びします。」老人は穏やかに説明しました。
En: I apologize for startling you with the footsteps each night." The old man explained calmly.

Ja: ユキは驚きましたが、老人の言葉で安心しました。
En: Although surprised, Yuki felt reassured by the old man%27s words.

En: "Why can the footsteps be heard?" she asked.
