Story Transcript:

Nl: De wind blies door Jan's haar terwijl hij op zijn fiets sprong.
En: The wind blew through Jan's hair as he hopped on his bike.

Nl: Hij zuchtte, keek naar het broodje haring in zijn hand en dan naar de drukke straten van Amsterdam, vol mensen, auto's en andere fietsers.
En: He sighed, looked at the herring sandwich in his hand, and then at the busy streets of Amsterdam, full of people, cars, and other cyclists.

Nl: "Het is tijd", zei hij zachtjes tegen zichzelf, en met de moed die hij kon verzamelen, begon hij te fietsen.
En: "It's time," he said softly to himself, and with all the courage he could gather, he started cycling.

Nl: De Damrak straat, vol met winkels en mensen, was zijn eerste obstakel.
En: Damrak street, filled with shops and people, was his first obstacle.

Nl: Hij moest zijn balance bewaren, van zijn broodje haring genieten en andere fietsers vermijden.
En: He had to maintain his balance, enjoy his herring sandwich, and avoid other cyclists.

Nl: Daar bovenop kwamen de duiven.
En: On top of that, there were pigeons.

Nl: Ze vlogen laag, zwaaiden om zijn hoofd.
En: They flew low, swooping around his head.

Nl: Jan hield zijn broodje hoger, weg van hun graaiende snavels.
En: Jan held his sandwich higher, away from their grasping beaks.

Nl: Hij sloeg af naar de smalle Kalverstraat, waar mensen winkelden en liepen zonder acht te slaan op de fietsers.
En: He turned onto the narrow Kalverstraat, where people shopped and walked without paying attention to cyclists.

Nl: Een kind schoot plotseling uit een winkel, een bal achterna.
En: Suddenly, a child shot out of a store, chasing a ball.

Nl: Jan wierp een snelle blik op zijn broodje haring, maakte een scherpe bocht en wist het kind maar net te ontwijken.
En: Jan glanced quickly at his herring sandwich, made a sharp turn, and barely avoided the child.

Nl: Na de Kalverstraat was de grachtengordel waar toeristen en inwoners genoten van de schoonheid van de stad.
En: After Kalverstraat came the canal belt, where tourists and locals enjoyed the beauty of the city.

Nl: Bruine cafés, bloemrijke boompjes en historische gevels maakten het een mooie, maar gevaarlijke plek voor een fietser met een broodje haring.
En: Brown cafés, flowery trees, and historic facades made it a beautiful but dangerous place for a cyclist with a herring sandwich.

Nl: Hij week uit voor een groep toeristen en voelde plotseling een wiebel onder zijn voet - een kasseiensteen was los.
En: He swerved to avoid a group of tourists and suddenly felt a wobble under his foot - a cobblestone was loose.

Nl: Met nog maar een hand op zijn stuur, sperde Jan zijn ogen wijd open terwijl hij naar voren leunde om zijn evenwicht te bewaren.
En: With only one hand on his handlebars, Jan widened his eyes as he leaned forward to maintain his balance.

Nl: Het leek een eeuwigheid te duren, maar uiteindelijk won zijn gewicht het van de zwaartekracht.
En: It seemed to last an eternity, but eventually his weight overcame gravity.

Nl: Zijn achterband gleed weg en met een harde klap belandde hij op de grond – maar hij hield zijn broodje haring nog steeds hoog in lucht.
En: His rear tire slipped away and he landed on the ground with a loud thud – but he still held his herring sandwich high in the air.

Nl: Kreunend stond hij op, struikelend op zijn fiets.
En: Groaning, he stood up, stumbling over his bike.

Nl: Zijn broek was scheurd, zijn hand gekneusd, maar zijn broodje haring?
En: His pants were torn, his hand bruised, but his herring sandwich?

Nl: Met een triomfantelijke glimlach, fietste Jan verder, zijn smaakpapillen tingelend van de haring.
En: With a triumphant smile, Jan continued cycling, his taste buds tingling from the herring.

Nl: Hij had het onmogelijke bereikt.
En: He had achieved the impossible.

Nl: Amsterdam met al haar drukte en chaos, had hem uitgedaagd en hij had overwonnen.
En: Amsterdam with all its hustle and chaos had challenged him, and he had overcome it.

Nl: En zo gaat het verhaal, van de man die de straten van Amsterdam trotseerde, alles voor het behoud van zijn broodje haring.
