Week 5 – Transfer students in ASUC, union demonstrations, Yom HaShoah
22 MAY 2023 · With ASUC elections recently behind us, we can now step back and assess how well this new batch of elected officials actually represents the student body. Are they an accurate reflection? If not, what’s missing? Next, our guest host will talk to a reporter duo who covered recent demonstrations from a union demanding a wage increase as well as those opposing campus’s partnership with a controversial real estate income trust. Lastly, we’ll sit down with a reporter who covered the commemoration of the Jewish day of Holocaust remembrance, Yom HaShoah, on campus. Music: - Library, walz - Miles away, walz - Union, walz -
Week 4 – Wage negotiations, Holi, digital Cal 1 Cards
27 MAR 2023 · After weeks of bargaining, UC Berkeley and UAW 2865 remain split on wages, fee remission and hiring levels for EECS and data science course staff. Why are negotiations stuck, what impact has this had on students and what is ultimately at stake? On March 18, the Indian Students Association, or ISA, held its annual celebration of Holi, a popular spring festival celebrated by South Asians around the world. How was the event for its attendees, and what were the complaints about its ticketing system? Lastly, there’s talk that Cal 1 Cards could be digitized soon, with testing to begin this semester on a mobile app, but there’s also drama regarding who came up with the idea. What will this mean for students, and what’s going on with the program? -
Week 3 – Big Give, Michael Delacour, library funding
20 MAR 2023 · Big Give raises over $12 million for UC Berkeley students and programs. What’s the history of this program, how has it evolved over the years, and how have campus organizations become more dependent upon donations to stay afloat? Michael Delacour, the co-founder of People’s Park, dies at 85. We’ll do a feature on Mr. Delacour, his life, his work, and his legacy through his friends and family. In a campus-wide email sent February 23, the administration said that they would be closing the Anthropology Library, a decision which has been met with protests. What have people been saying, and how much funding does the library have compared to other programs on campus? Music credits: - Library, walz - BLee, walz - Yen, walz - Miles Away, walz -
Week 2 – People’s Park, chess, Student Action
6 MAR 2023 · An appellate court ruled that UC Berkeley cannot proceed with plans to build student housing and low-income housing on People’s Park. Why did they rule this way, and what does it mean for campus? Ever see the chess tables and players at Telegraph and Haste? We’ll do a feature on them, exploring how they were formed and how they impact the local community. Finally, Student Action is not planning on running any candidates for this year’s ASUC election. Why are they doing this so close to the election, and what does this mean for candidates who would have otherwise run with them?
