20 JAN 2026 · ML is impatient for peace in Ukraine, while Marc says he's fine if we snatch Greenland. Disagreement over college football and an exploration of Mike Duggan's campaign follow.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Before getting to the news, ML is wistful about last week's guest Rob Wolchek and he and Marc recount one of Rob's greatest "Fame or Shame" segments, which involved sticking celebrity pawn broker Les Gold in a boat to see if it would float/
ML and Marc turn to the "Greenland dilemma" and wonder whether Donald Trump’s interest in Greenland is a policy goal -- or a political diversion.
Marc and ML muse over why we "can't just get along," and whether politics will ever return to bi-partisanship -- other than Democrats and Republicans both seeking the Jeffrey Epstein files to use as weapons to attack political opponents rather than to seek justice for victims.
ML says the price of shaved turkey is too damn high!
Marc asks if former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan can really win the Michigan governor's race. ML offers his insights -- and says money won't be a problem for Hizzoner.
Guess where Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is? DAVOS, SWITZERLAND! Marc thinks it's funny that the rich and powerful swear there is no international cabal running the world, then posse up in Switzerland to, well, plot how to run the world.
ML and Marc's latest disagreement over college football involves the national championship. ML rooted for the Indiana Hoosiers, while Marc put his money on the Miami Hurricanes.

GEEK OF THE WEEK: They won nothing -- and didn't even make the playoffs -- but ML hates to see the Detroit Lions go unheralded, so he tries to name them this week's geek for their inconsistent pricing policy ... until Marc butts in.

13 JAN 2026 · A deep dive with legendary Fox 2 investigative reporter Rob Wolchek as he prepares for his upcoming retirement in March 2026. The team discusses the origins of the "Hall of Shame," the work that goes into a "Wolchek ambush," and his perspective on nearly three decades of reporting in Detroit.
STRAIGHT DOPE:
The Origin of the "Hall of Shame"
- The Tagline: Rob reveals that the "Hall of Shame" branding was a result of station management wanting him to have a unique identity. He rejected several "corny" suggestions.
- The Delivery: The signature deep-voiced delivery of "You’re in the Hall of Shame" came from a moment of frustration when producers kept telling him to "sell it".
- Making a Mark: An LA native, Rob felt he could be bolder in Detroit because he didn't know anyone in the city initially, allowing him to "ham it up" without self-consciousness.
The Art of the Investigation
- The "5% Rule": Rob estimates that 95% of people are good and follow the rules; his career has been dedicated to hunting the 5% who can cheat others without feeling guilt.
- Preparation over Aggression: Rob emphasizes that he isn't scared during confrontations because he is over-prepared.
- Why Not a "Hall of Fame"?: Addressing why he doesn't highlight "good" businesses, Rob explains that "somebody doing their job is not news".
Retirement and Legacy
- The Decision: At age 67, Rob admits retirement is a "very tough decision" because he truly loves being the "Hall of Shame guy".
- The Next Generation: Rob’s son, Scott Wolchek, is now a reporter at Fox 2. Rob clarifies that he had no hand in Scott’s hiring; management didn't even tell Rob they had hired his son until two weeks after the fact.
- Coming to Detroit: Rob originally viewed Detroit as a "top 10 market" pitstop on his way back to Los Angeles. However, he "grasped down" to the city and its people, ultimately staying for 28 years
GEEK OF THE WEEK: Pennsylvania man, Jonathan Gerlach, allegedly stole human remains from graves to turn his home into a "haunted house". He was caught after leaving behind high-energy drink cans and using his Ace Hardware rewards card to buy the tools for the break-ins
ROOM 7609: A song about Rob! Boby Standal honored Rob by writing and performing the song "Hall of Shame Hero."
FEEDBACK: Sports Journalism Ethics- Monica wants our thoughts on the viral clip of a Jacksonville Jaguars reporter "comforting" a coach after a loss.
ML's Take: While he found the "cheerleading" cringey and embarrassing for the profession, he notes that sports press conferences are often "fraudulent" anyway.

6 JAN 2026 · ESPN scoop-machine Dan Wetzel reveals how he spent his Christmas vacation breaking big stories about the Michigan Wolverines.
STRAIGHT DOPE: ML and Marc are back in the studio with one of their favorite guests -- but before Dan Wetzel shares how he spent his holidays writing about outgoing Michigan Wolverine football coach Sherrone Moore and his replacement Kyle Whittingham, ML goes ham on Great Wolf Lodge.
Marc invited Dan on to talk about how his Christmas vacation got interrupted by the eruptions in Ann Arbor, but Dan observes that college sports reporters, like crime reporters in Chicago, never have slow news days.
Dan tells a tale about how he and a colleague broke a big story while one of them was whitewater rafting while hosting a bachelor's party. ML observes that they were lucky he was on the river, because phones aren't allowed at most bachelor parties.
Just about everyone Dan and ML knows has complained that the media sat on the Sherrone Moore affair story. The scribes explain WHY it can take time to report on what starts as a rumor.
What do the Sherrone Moore affair and Kwame Kilpatrick text message stories have in common? Get the bell ready -- it's not what you think!
Dan and ML discuss what it takes for a RESPONSIBLE reporter to feel they have enough information to publish a story. ML says social media "journalists" brag about the few stories they get right, while the mainstream media gets crucified for getting even one detail wrong.
Marc asks Dan about covering the portal, college football's version of speed dating, which ML says seems a lot more like the free agency period in professional sports. Dan explains how it works.

GEEK OF THE WEEK: ML cites the journalism maxim "There's no excuse for kicking someone when they're down," then kicks the always down New York Jets for a controversy involving a kicker.

30 DEC 2025 · Happy New Year! This week we are revisiting two more of our Patreon BONUS episodes. Two legendary Detroit sportscasters, Bernie Smilovitz and John Keating, share some unforgettable stories.
STRAIGHT DOPE: Bernie Smilovitz’s Career and Personal Reflections.
- The New York "Anchors Away" media firings: Bernie recounts his brief, tumultuous time at WCBS in New York, where he was abruptly fired alongside nine other top earners after Westinghouse bought the station to cut costs.
- Family and Personal Loss: He speaks movingly about his late wife, Donna. He credits her with managing their family while he worked late-night shifts and for her own mid-career transition into becoming a doctor. He also highlights the success of his sons, including one who became a comedy writer for David Letterman and Netflix.
- Anecdotes and Bloopers: Bernie shares humorous behind-the-scenes moments, such as a falcon pooping on set during a live broadcast and Steve Yzerman jokingly attributing his longevity to Viagra after winning the Stanley Cup.
- The State of TV News: He discusses the changing landscape of local television, noting that stations are cutting veteran salaries and requiring reporters to shoot and edit their own material.
- Media Colleagues: Bernie and ML speak highly of local media figures like Dan Miller, Devin Scillian, and Jamie Edmonds.
- Winter Classic Memories: Bernie recalls a harrowing drive to a snow-filled hockey game at Michigan Stadium with Mickey Redmond, who insisted on eating a bowl of cereal while driving through the storm.
NEXT UP: John Keating, a recently retired Detroit sports broadcasting legend, serves as a retrospective of his 45-year career covering the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings.
- The "Paul Byrd" Rant: Keating recounts a famous story where Leyland flipped a table in frustration after a loss to pitcher Paul Byrd, calling him an "American Legion pitcher".
- The 3:00 AM Baseball Talk: Former reliever Todd Jones shared a memory of staying overnight in the clubhouse with his son; at 3:00 AM, Leyland walked into the dark room in his underwear, sat on the edge of the bed, and talked baseball for an hour.
- A Personal Touch: Despite his "salty" exterior, Leyland was known for his genuine care for players, often walking the field to check on their families and well-being
- Scotty Bowman’s Mind Games: Keating details how Bowman used psychological tactics to keep players on their toes, such as the "signing stick" trick to catch players breaking curfew.
- The Yzerman Standard: He reflects on how Steve Yzerman was molded by Bowman’s discipline, transforming from a pure scorer into a defensive-minded leader who commanded immense respect and kept the media at a distance to protect the team
- Tough Interviews: Keating mentions players like Delmon Young and Victor Martinez as being particularly difficult to interview during tense periods.
- Favorite Personalities: Conversely, he praises the professionalism and openness of stars like Justin Verlander, Pudge Rodriguez, and Max Scherzer.
- Next Steps: Following his retirement in April 2025, Keating plans to spend more time with his family in Grand Haven and co-host the "Ozzy and Keats" podcast with former Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood.

23 DEC 2025 · Merry Christmas! This week we are revisiting two of our Patreon BONUS episodes. We go deep into Detroit mob history with mafia expert Scott Burnstein. AND Neil Rubin shares some of his most memerable newspaper stories.
STRAIGHT DOPE: First up- Mafia historian Scott Burnstein tells us about the evolution and current status of organized crime in Detroit.
The Harvard of the Mafia: The Detroit mob, specifically the Toco-Zerilli crime family, has long been considered the "Ivy League" of the American Mafia
From the Purple Gang to Las Vegas: Burnstein, who has a personal bloodline connection to the infamous Burnstein brothers of the Purple Gang, discusses Detroit’s pivotal role in the birth of Las Vegas.
Modern Rackets: Legal Marijuana and Cyber Crime: The mob hasn't just stuck to traditional loan sharking and extortion. They have adapted to the "gray areas" of modern law. Burnstein explains how they have muscled into the legal marijuana trade, often shaking down licensed growers and dispensaries for a "cut" of their product.
Deep Political Ties: Burnstein claims that past administrations, including those of Coleman Young and Kwame Kilpatrick, had documented connections to mob figures. In Kilpatrick's case, a prominent mobster was even caught on an FBI wire speaking with the mayor, illustrating just how close these organizations remained to the city's corridors of power.
NEXT UP: Detroit Free Press reporter Neil Rubin shared a collection of "tragic, comic" stories from his decades-long career covering the city. From local legends to the changing landscape of Detroit's retail and media, Rubin’s insights provide a unique window into the heart of the Motor City.
The Tragic Legend of Reggie Harding: Rubin recounted the story of Reggie Harding, a 7-foot-tall Detroit basketball star whose talent was often overshadowed by trouble. In one infamous incident, Harding attempted to rob a neighborhood party store while wearing a mask.
A City in Transition: From the RenCen to Kmart: Rubin’s recent reporting has focused on the changing faces of iconic Detroit locations.
Detroit Media Secrets Uncovered: Rubin recently reconnected with former TV news fixtures John Kleekamp and Mike Huckman, who were a couple but had to remain closeted during their careers in the early 1990s and 2000s to protect their jobs .
Exposing Corruption in Detroit Schools: One of Rubin's proudest stories involved Norman Shy, a contractor who defrauded Detroit Public Schools through a kickback scheme.
The Ultimate Opening Act Disaster: Rubin closed with an anecdote from comedian Albert Brooks. Brooks was once hired to open for Sly and the Family Stone, a mismatch that resulted in the audience throwing things at him within five minutes.

16 DEC 2025 · Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield’s dad the Rev. Horace Sheffield III talks about what it’s like to be father of the first female mayor in Detroit’s 324-year history, and answers some burning questions — before asking plenty of his own.
STRAIGHT DOPE: ML and the Rev. Horace Sheffield III go w-a-a-a-y back. It’s a relationship with plenty of ups and downs. After ML went on Horace’s radio show during the mayoral campaign, Horace reciprocated with a visit to Red Shovel HQ.
The Sheffields are Detroit royalty going back three generations, which is why a 13-year-old Horace was asked to speak to a high school after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Horace has had plenty to say ever since.
ML and Marc, like Horace, are fathers of girls. But they are not fathers of mayors. So ML asks Horace how he handles the temptation to want to be “dad” to a grown woman who just became one of the most powerful people in Michigan. Erika, the only daughter in the room, weighs in, too.
Horace raves about his new son-in-law, Rickey Jackson Jr., prompting ML to ask why his identity was such a big secret for so long.
ML asks Horace why his daughter’s wedding was such a big secret — and why she thought she could keep it secret for so long. He also asks who paid for the wedding. Listen to learn what the father of the bride had to say about it all.
Horace asks ML why the media needed to know about the wedding — and whether ML thinks the media has been fair to Black politicians and elected officials.
Mayor Mike Duggan endorsed Mary Sheffield for mayor, but Horace says he doesn’t plan to return the favor in the governor’s race. Listen and learn why.
Horace asks ML if he wants Mary Sheffield to succeed as mayor — and pushes to find out who ML voted for.
ML asks Horace to help him persuade his daughter to help him achieve a major objective. Hear what it is — and let us know at mailto:mlsoulofdetroit@gmail.com whether you care as much as ML.

9 DEC 2025 · A secret marriage in Detroit and a secretive engagement party in Lansing start this week’s show, before ML and Marc fight with the Irish over their controversial decision to take their football and stay home.
STRAIGHT DOPE: What turned out to be the worst-kept secret in Detroit was confirmed Sunday, when the Detroit Free Press reported that Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield got married to Rickey Jackson Jr., a relative unknown in Detroit political circles who was virtually invisible during the campaign. A month earlier, a Lansing lobbyist hosted an engagement party for two state lawmakers who have demonstrated a penchant for taking free things from paid influencers.
Before we dive into those curious tales, an update on the Killer Cares event that dominated last week’s show: Thanks to everyone who came out or donated, the fundraiser raked in $176,000. ML tells Marc that he, once again, won more silent auction items than he intended. Marc asks for an inventory.
https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2025/12/07/detroit-mayor-elect-mary-sheffield-marriage-wedding-post-social-media/87631075007/ https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2025/12/08/mary-sheffield-marries-rickey-jackson-jr-private-detroit-ceremony/87667615007/

Marc asks why Sheffield wanted to keep her wedding a secret. ML offers some theories.
The man who might have some answers – the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, the mayor-elect’s father – is planning to come on the show next week.
Marc has only one beef with the Free Press coverage of Sheffield’s wedding – and it’s all about the punctuation in a headline. Seriously! Listen and learn.
Marc feels the media didn’t scrutinize Sheffield during the mayoral race. ML recounts some of the Free Press’ watchdog reporting – on several of the candidates.
Love is in the air, and not just in Detroit! https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2025/11/22/lansing-lobbyist-threw-engagement-party-for-michigan-lawmakers-wendzel-vanwoerkom-robert-lulgjuraj/87395163007/

Marc wonders whether the lobbyist who threw the party might have any clients who could use a couple friends in the Legislature. ML offers some insights.
Keeping with the wedding theme, later in the show Marc inquires about ML’s wedding, which was both more simple and more complicated than you might expect.

2 DEC 2025 · Jocks, celebrities and local media luminaries assemble THIS FRIDAY, Dec. 5 to help raise money for the Tom Kowalski Foundation at the annual Killer’s Christmas event at The Lodge in Keego Harbor. Matt Riley, the man who brings everyone together year after year to support this great cause, tells ML, Marc and Shawn what’s new and who's who.
STRAIGHT DOPE: https://killercares.org/
ML, Marc, Shawn and Erika will be behind the bar from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., slinging drinks to raise money for children’s charities. Come out to bend an elbow and say hello!
Matt and ML recall Killer Kowalski, who was tough on the Detroit Lions, but still so beloved that the team named the press room at Ford Field in his honor. Listen and learn more about this legend.
There are lots of amazing, unique items to bid on at the event. Marc wonders why ML always seems to end up as the high bidder on some of the most embarrassing items, like the pink kitty cat playhouse and a basket full of lotions. Shawn perks up at the mention of excessive lotion.
There are a lot of big games this weekend: MSU-UM hockey in East Lansing Friday night, Duke-MSU basketball in East Lansing Saturday afternoon, and UM-MSU hockey in Ann Arbor Saturday night. Matt and Shawn reveal how Wojo weaseled his way out of covering some of them … and how his colleague John Niyo got stuck with the assignments – and the late shift at the bar!
Matt talks about some of the exclusive swag and tickets that will available – including Killer’s Cooler, a coffin-sized collection of swanky hootch that will be raffled off.

Marc is not a soup guy, and Erika’s story isn’t doing much to change his mind. ML says there’s another food he stopped eating after he read what was in it. Listen and learn what popular item he avoids at all costs.
ML does his David Muir impression, prompting Erika and Marc to question whether he’s just jealous of the hunky ABC News anchor. (Answer: A little.)
Shawn makes the scene just in time to extol the virtues of soup … though he’s not a fan of yams – or what you might call a sweet potato.
The Big Game is coming up. Shawn, Marc and ML speculate on whether the Buckeyes will finally get the upper hand on the Wolverines after four straight losses.

18 NOV 2025 · Dan Wetzel of ESPN explains how U-M blew up a plan to bring $2.4 billion into the Big Ten while ML bemoans the state of college sports … again.

Marc asks Dan to tell us what U-M and USC have in common that may be keeping them from signing a $2.4 billion deal with a private capital firm that wants to buy into college football with a lucrative 20-year deal.
Private capital sounds a lot like private equity to ML, who has some pretty strong feelings about how these entities have impacted America.
Dan says the U-M-OSU football game is worth a QUARTER BILLION DOLLARS on its own. Then he offers some sage dating advice.
ML – once again – fights for the “non-revenue” sports. He is – once again – beaten down by Marc, Shawn and Dan.
Dan says MSU is a high-value, high-quality program, yet ML STILL isn’t happy to hear what he has to say. Listen in and let us know how YOU feel about it.
